Princess Elsa, R2-D2, Spider-Man, and Doctor Who were all in attendance at this years Farmer Fred’s Harvest Carnival in Plaza Park.
The San Marcos Parks and Recreation Department hosted the free carnival on Oct. 29.
Jessica Ramos, youth services manager for San Marcos Parks and Recreation, said the event celebrated over twenty years in the community.
Attendees under the age of 12 had the opportunity to participate in a costume contest and train rides in addition to classic carnival games and food throughout the evening.
Ramos said the event is catered towards families looking for a safe event to take their children to.
“I would definitely say it is a family event,” Ramos said. “Especially for the kids. It is always fun to see them dressed up in their costumes.”
Lindsey Abel, San Marcos resident, said she was excited to learn the city hosts the fall themed carnival every year.
“It is not like a huge carnival, but I am all about Halloween and costumes and just having fun,” Abel said. “You can tell both the adults and kids get excited for the costumes.”
Antonio Vasquez, New Braunfels resident, said having a free event to bring his family to is one of the carnivals biggest perks.
“I am happy the city provides these type of free events,” Vasquez said. “It has that small town feel to it too, and I know it will be something my whole family will be able to enjoy, without making a dent our wallets.”

Ramos said the fair would not be what it is today without the help of volunteers from Texas State and surrounding areas.
“They are the ones who are running the booth, and running the costume contest,” Ramos said “We could not do it without them. That is where our college kids really shine at our event, they make it happen.”
Tanesha Jones, festival volunteer, said she was excited to have the opportunity to give back to her community though her volunteer work at the festival.
“It is a lot,” Jones said. “But I think just seeing other people feeling good is what makes me feel good about what I am doing.”
Johnny Garcia, San Marcos resident, said his kids enjoyed the variety of carnival games at the event.
“The kids really got a kick out of the different games,” Garcia said. “There were so many different kinds for the kids to go to.”
Garcia said the festival featured over 36 different carnival games and stations that gave parents and their kids the opportunity to bond throughout the evening.
“Time goes by really fast,” Garcia said. “Instead of just sitting on your phone or watching a movie you get to interact with your children, and play some games.”

Amber Laird, New Braunfels resident, said one of the most unique portions of the festival was the screening of Halloween themed cartoons and movies throughout the evening.
“It is nice,” Laird said. “It is really cute to just lay there with your family or friends or whoever you are with and laugh at all the cartoons together.”
Elliot Sales, San Marcos resident, said the festival was a nice way to spend the final days of October.
“It is a friendly environment,” Sales said. “The kids in the costumes, and all of the games just makes it feel like it is already Halloween. I would definitely tell other people to come here next year.”
